The Certificate in Queer Studies program celebrated Florida International University’s WST 3641: LGBT and Beyond class and highlighted local queer talent at the end of the spring semester mixer. FIU’s Women Studies Student Association, Council for Student Organizations, and Center for Women’s and Gender Studies cosponsored the mixer which celebrated the accomplishments of their students of the past academic year.
Dr. Justin Grant, instructor and certificate director for the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, along side his interns, Marcel Hartley and Joey Gebella, hosted the mixer with community partners and a queer performance showcase. Partners included Sexual Health Alliance Revolutionizing Positivity — a student organization focused on promoting sexual health and creating a healthy space for sexuality exploration — Simple Pleasures, a student organization bringing awareness to the sexual inequalities — and Florida’s Department of Health “Getting 2 Zero” campaign.
Attendees enjoyed drag queen performances by Mosaic, Daphne Lux, Juanita Labanjee and Jahsyra. Singing talent included Louanne Clerger and Amelia Leon. The evening ended with a dramatic monologue reading from Marcel Hartley.
