FIU’s Agroecology Program recently hosted its International Workshop on Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture (IWASA).
More than a dozen students, all of whom were out-of-state from different universities, participated. Students networked with other young scholars who shared a common goal – to make the future more sustainable using agroecological techniques.
The workshop, which focuses on the application of agroecological principles for sustaining subtropical agriculture, consisted of multiple excursions throughout South Florida and informative lectures from experts in their field. Destinations included:

- ECHO Farm
- Verde Gardens
- Possum Trot
- Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery
- Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
- Fruit and Spice Park
- Glaser Organic Farm
Students participated in hands-on activities and toured the grounds to gain a better understanding of what it takes to run a successful farming business in today’s market. They also had the chance to listen to guest speakers Jorge Menocal and Jeff Wasielewski. Menocal shared insight on agriculture, and Wasielewski spoke about commercial tropical fruit.
