Dr. Rita Teutonico, Associate Dean of Research with FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education, recently organized a workshop to bring together expert scientists, economists, engineers, architects and community leaders to plan for a more climate change resilient Caribbean. The workshop, held in Cuba, marked the first National Science Foundation-funded meeting to ever be held in the country.
The Caribbean and other coastal communities are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Devastating natural disasters – like hurricanes – are becoming more common and deadlier as a consequence of our rapidly changing climate. The Caribbean region is unique in that it has a large and diverse geography, culture and set of numerous stakeholders in a complex and ever-changing environment.
Teutonico, Dr. Todd Crowl and a tri-national team of co-organizers orchestrated this workshop to develop a new road map for coastal resilience in Caribbean communities.
