FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education is partnering with the Miami-Dade Public Library System to bring literary adventures to life via interactive, hands-on STEAM-centric programs.
In August, FIU CASE launched the new “Rocket Racers” program at the recently renovated Allapattah Branch Library. Young locals engineered air-propelled rockets, discovering how the power of physics guides their flights to success.
At the Lemon City Branch Library, the focus was shifted to the smallest heroes of the planet—plankton. Attendees used microscopes to understand their anatomy and purpose. Afterward, they made models to “race” underwater. Didn’t get a chance to participate? Good news – there are three more activations on the horizon this September. Check them out below:
- Saturday, Sept. 14 (2:00 – 3:30 p.m.) – “Animal Encounter” at the South Shore Branch Library
- Identify how invertebrate marine species (like sea urchins, snails, crabs and more) play specific roles in balancing our local South Florida ecosystems.
- Saturday, Sept. 28 (2:30 – 4:00 p.m.) – “Energy Matters” at the West Kendall Regional Library
- Observe the wonders behind unique energy transformations with a Tesla coil, plasma globe, liquid nitrogen and other activities to understand physical and chemical reactions.
